On my cross bike I use a Shimano CX50 46/36 crank, that I got from Merlin Cycles for $76:

It'll require a new bottom bracket as it's a Hollowtech II crankset. I use this one:

If you want to stick with square taper, so you don't have to switch out the bottom bracket, then why not consider a compact crankset (50/34)? Probably easier to find than a square taper CX crankset, and if you get one with 110 BCD, then you could aways put CX rings on it.
