The big mod will be the addition of brifters and new handlebars. Salsa Cowbell 2 handlebars, which will require a quill adapter, and Microshift 3x7 brifters, which will require a 7 speed freewheel (which I have thanx to a local BF member) in the same gear range, but the derailleurs should be fine so no changes there.
That sounds like a great chunk of bike.

The more I look at the 87 520- you understand a little better why the 720 and 620 were discontinued- the 87 520 was a heck of a bike. Setting up the bars and shifters to your liking is important- regardless of how badass old people were.

I REALLY dig my C17- I'm going to be springing for another one this summer.
