Take a look at a pro's training bike some time: in addition to giant saddle bags you'll find frame pumps, mismatched tires, ****ty handlebar tape, beat up cranksets, etc. I guess they don't look very "pro". Heck, Chris Horner used to race with a saddle bag...
There are a few pics like that and everyone makes a big deal of that. I've seen pro riders training all over the place and about the only thing I've see different is an occassional spare tire under the saddle.
