The other common problem when replacing a gear wire is to not have it's head actually seated into the lever's spool. If the wire is fed into the lever pod when the lever is not fully released to the high gear (for high normal rears and most every front system) it's possible to thread the wire through the lever pod but not through the spool's cable head seat. How do I check for this?
I took another swing at this today and I can get the gear level to switch up to 5 (out of 8) while inserting the cable but no higher. After that it's the same - the bike is rid-able but there is no resistance in the trigger, no matter how hard I tighten the cable.
