Trek Marlin 5 29er Reviews | Mountain Bike Reviews || SINGLETRACKS.COM The reviews aren't all that glowing. The front suspension and the tires get bad reviews.
One thing to be sure of is that this bike does not have one of the recalled SR Suntour M-3030 front forks. SR Suntour recalls more than 100k forks | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News The fact that SR recalled 100,000 of these forks in 2015 is not a good sign of a quality product. Isn't there a similar model with no front suspension? This is an entry level bike and if you read many of the responses in other posts you will see that a lot of people recommend not buying an entry level bike with front suspension if you are going to ride mostly on the road or paved paths.
As to the tire. The size is 29" and a quick look at the selection for 29" tires from Niagara Cycle where I buy tires for bike restoration show very few that are what you would call a "city tire" with a smooth tread. The least expensive one is $29
WTB Slick 2.2 29" Comp Tire Steel Bead and that's about twice what I pay for a decent tire in the 26" size $15
Kenda K838 Slick 26" x 1.95" Slick Tire that I use on my Cannondale Beast of the East MTB for road use.
Thanks for the reply. I'll need to look into the front fork. These are nice bikes and at this price point, it's about 2X what he deserves, but I do want something to last a few years til he outgrows it.
Also, for the larger frames you are correct they have a 29" tire, but for the smaller frames, they are the 27.5".
