I did a charity ride last year (Bike the Bridge in Detroit) where for whatever stupid reason they decided to keep all 500 participants in one group. Every mile or so we'd stop for a few minutes and let all the stragglers catch up. One of those kitted out groups eventually just took their numbers off, removed themselves from the police escort, and took off on their own.
