On the race style bike would gains be expected after a certain level of fitness, or after longer rides, or after you're able to maintain a higher average speed? Where does the benefit come in on a high end bike? Other than the obvious "looks factor", like a Ferrari vs station wagon. ha

Erich, after so many responses to your original post , you haven't posted anything!!
My take is that higher end road bikes are meant for racing. The demands of racing call for extremes and those kind of bikes live up to that. Years ago bikes like Fuji and Jamis were not even in the Grand Tours; now they are.
