To me it is merely an example of how topics of discussion begin to wander as the dialogue spreads. You see it all the time in BF as well. The subject has merely expanded to the general issue of cycling on the roadways, and perfectly legitimate comments about helmets, keeping to the right, and other precautionary methods creep into the dialogue. The job of those of us outraged by a (drunk?) driver killing so many riders is to keep the focus of THIS incident on THAT set of facts: and that falls primarily to the DAs and police who prosecute this case. That is where the changes really need to be made, because I think many police and prosecutors still harbor ideas that driving while drunk is a "cute" violation of the law, instead of a murderous and especially evil one.
Do we know that to be the case? At this point no use of alcohol has been mentioned by LEOs on the case.
