Yes - my first thought was that is more money than I'd spend on a commuter unless I had a very secure place to lock it. (ie. indoor or at least covered locked storage)
Any bike is a good commuter if it's a geometry you like to ride, and can accept fenders and a rack. Personally, I wouldn't try to commute more than about 5km without drop bars - straight bars/risers annoy me anytime I've got a headwind.
