I completely agree that most of us lack the power to use 53x11 for more than a very short effort. But many of us can use that gear for very short, okay, very very short efforts.

I used to sprint up the approach to a bridge on my daily commute. A 2% grade, in the drops, 700x25 mm tires, bike weighed 35 lb (loaded up with commute stuff), I weighed 188 lb plus full raingear. I'd enter the approach at about 25 mph, then kill myself for as long as I could, which wasn't very long. My effort lasted not much over 100 m. At the max, I could hit 32 mph (31.7 to be exact). Not sure what the peak watts is for that - don't have my calculator handy. But I think it's probably in the 800 watt range?
