I try for first floor too. But regardless my bicycle goes in the hotel room. For one thing I would not trust people at the hotel. But with four panniers and stuff on my racks it's just easier to manage leaving the bike loaded. I'll want stuff from the panniers in my room. And would certainly not consider leaving that stuff for somebody to watch for me!

I've read that some people ask (and are refused) for permission to bring their bike into the room. I don't beg the question. I've never been challenged about it but if I were would express shock that buying a room doesn't automatically include bringing your bicycle and other personal items inside.
