So, today was the Syracuse Ironman 70.3. Yesterday, one of the participants brought his bike to the shop first thing in the morning (he was camped out by the front door). He had shipped his bike from Texas and reassembled it Friday night. The chain was routed thru the RD incorrectly and he handed me a small bit of metal that he said fell out of the cassette.
The second thing I noticed was that the bike was dripping with lube.
I rerouted and repined the chain. Then, I took apart the hub inspected it, put the errant pawl back where it belonged and regreased everything with Dura-Ace grease.
The inside of the hub was also dripping with lube.
I think the guy tore down the hub and spray lubed everything. That's probably how the pawl became dislodged. He didn't say though, just conjecture.

My impression is that the tri set is more likely to spend big bucks on bikes and less likely to have basic wrenching knowledge. Of course that's a stereotype and possibly unfair to assume all tri geeks are like that.
