I too have a Dutch friend who had a concussion from a fall off a bike, but not as serious as your acquaintance.
Bottom line for me is risk assessment, and controlling the things I can. I certainly didn't want to get into a helmet or not debate, was really more how impressed I am with helmets being so much more comfortable than before, and how in all kinds of riding conditions and temperatures, I don't really even think of it being there.
