Not all pulleys are the same width. Older derailers may take wider pulleys since they're designed for a wider chain and the pulleys set the cage width.
Wouldn't that mean you just can't mix and match pulleys? As long as they're both the same width (and correct number of teeth) they should be fine? (Assuming the bolts still reach of course.)
