That's sound advice. Keeping focused on what makes functional differences to your ride keeps you from getting hooked in by all of the marketing hype. Everyone always talks about the lightest wheels etc. but you have to get what works best for the type of riding you do. A few years back someone I knew bought himself a pair of Zipp wheels and used them to commute to work. That's all well and good if you have reasonably paved roads and can ride continuously so you can enjoy aero wheels. His commute was filled with rough roads and eventually he cracked his rear rim on bad pothole while riding home at night.
