Thanks everyone for the responses. This has been a great bike so I am pleased to hear such positive comments about its origin.
About the seat post, yeah that clamp was on their when I bought it. I'm pretty sure the quill is on the seatpost but the clamp was on there to reinforce it since there seemed to be some trouble getting it tight -- or so I barely remember from 10+ years ago.
