ER visits isn't as happy a stat for cyclists, but we need to include those when talking about "safety". About 490,000 cycling-related ER visits in 2012. That would be in round figures one ER injury per 20,000 miles traveled.

BTW just to be explicit, dynodonn's numbers would mean cycling is 4-12 times as likely to have a fatality as travelling in a car.
The stats I cited are based on the annual body count of fatalities. So if the ERs from around the US receives 490,000 cyclists, they should expect 2.94 million motorists.
