Looking a bit more at my Campy levers, I think the 8/9s levers have much simpler ratchet gears than the 10s and 11s, and possibly would be in part reversible. Perhaps I'll try taking a pair of them apart, or at least try some tests on them.

I counted about 8 or 9 clicks for my left shifter (9s, I think).
