If you do sand it down to bare metal, make sure you get self-etching primer, it adheres to aluminum much better than regular primer. You can get good results from a rattle can, but you will be spending a lot of time sanding to get a really smooth finish. A spray gun applies paint more consistently, but its cost prohibitive if you don't plan on painting more projects.
