I'd use a paint stripper then wet sand the most visible areas, starting with 320, then 400, 600, 800, 1000, and finishing with compound. Polishing aluminum can be habit forming, and you may decide not to paint it. However, a few light coats over a polished surface would sure pop if you asked me.
