You usually have to snap off the inside of the screws or else the steerer rubs, in my experience. An old screwdriver and a hammer works for me.

I use these too. They are called "screw nails". McMasters-Carr has them for about $5 for a box of 100.

I have also epoxied head badges on. Works fine too.
