You are exactly right. It is important to see time spent in each zone.

Generic zones are really useless. You have to be able to customize the zones.

This is a screen shot of what Polar provides. It was an easy two hour aerobic zone 2 ride with a stop to chat with some friends. Sprinted at the end just because.
