I have recovered two, one of my own that been stolen out of my van and one belonging to my boss that had been stolen from his shed.
I'd left info on my bike with local shops and I later got a call that mine was at that moment in a shop. I went over there with a padlock and cable, walked in and locked my bike to an immovable object and was then prepared to "discuss" it with the guy. He stuck around until the police arrived, I could prove it was mine, he was arrested for possession of stolen property and I got to take my bike home.
The boss' Witcomb had been stolen months before and I was driving in his neighborhood on my way to a 4th of July picnic when I saw it being ridden. I followed the guy and when he went into a patch of woods I parked the car and followed him. I grabbed the Witcomb by the rear wheel, he grabbed it by the front, and he let go first.
There was no violence in either instance but I was unwisely prepared to engage, had it been necessary.
