Maybe one of our resident Schwinn experts can explain the lack of a date code. I'm still fairly confident it's a 1988 model. If I'm wrong, it can't be by more than a year or so. You can also cross-reference the serial number to get more info about the bike, like who built it where and maybe even when.

The spring only needs to be strong enough to overcome cable friction. If the caliper's not springing back, the culprit is much more likely to be increased friction from a dirty/worn cable than a problem with the spring. Invest just a few bucks in new cables and housings and I'm confident it'll behave like new.
