Mine had been refurbished when I bought it and as I rode it things started to wear out with use. I replaced those parts with ones I liked better as well as adding the lights and luggage that made it a commuter. Don't be afraid to replace parts with different ones after you ride for a while, that will help make it more functional for you.
Sounds good to me, I know I'm going to learn the most by "doing". It's good to have some knowledge though ahead of time so I'm not going "out there" getting a bunch of surprises, then not knowing what to do, forget that
