You might check out the drop bar MTB conversion thread over on C&V. There are some amazing bikes over there, not vastly different than yours, that have been set up for everything from singletrack to commuting to touring. Your frame is set up with eyelets to allow fenders, a rack, etc. so you can build it up to suit you.
I know you don't intend to do everything at once, and you may not have a clear vision yet of the Hardrock's ultimate configuration. That's fine; just realize you have a really, really good foundation upon which to build. Short of going really, really fast, you can make this bike into whatever you want - including a "trip up the coast" tourer.
I got chills reading this 35mm

No, I am not sure what I've even bought, I'm finding out thanks to a lot of good folks here like you though

I didn't know about it's configuration and ALL I can do with it. I do want to have it "road ready" as soon as I can. I want to go up the coast, and be able to camp along the way, have every thing I need on board

I really get excited, and so far, I haven't been discouraged once by other cyclers on BF. I mean people will be honest, thank goodness, even outspoken, I don't want info sugar-coated.
And you got me pegged because I am not a speed-demon, that's for sure, I just want to cruise, and enjoy as much of the scenery as I can

and meet lots of people along the way

especially others of my kind
