Shimano front derailleurs will work just fine with this combo, the Shimano specs are conservative and there's always room to stretch. On the other hand, it's hard to find a 53T ring that matches his cranks (110mm BCD). If OP has the newer 4 legged 6800 cranks, the 52T type MB (Y1P498070) should fit but it's not cheap ($>$100).
At that price point you're better off replacing the crank with a standard, but then that begs the question as to whether they want to keep the 34 or not.
