I got this bike used a couple of years ago but never bothered looking into it, I'm thinking the derailleur is too narrow since the chain rubs on both extremes?
The chain is still going to want to pull in those combinations. You'll need a chain guide though for the chain to rub on instead. And, if you haven't noticed, your crank arm bolts onto your biggest chain ring - so you basically need to replace everything.
