Fatigue is enemy #1 on long distance rides.

I choose a pace that is a bit slower than my normal pace on long distance rides (100KM+), and wind it up at the end if I have gas in the tank.
I believe the overlap seemed to be from closing a little gap and being sucked into the guys draft with his hands away from the brakes. Erratic paceline speeds are exciting enough but you'd better be ready on the brakes when that happens.

And absolutely starting too fast can be counterproductive.....Not my better elapsed times in centuries such as they ever were.
