It's a bit late in the thread, but I have a question for the OP.

The photos posted were close up, so it was impossible to know where on the top tube the break is. That may or may not be relevant but just to rule what may be a simple explanation out, can you swing the front wheel until the handlebar hits the frame?

Where is that with respect to the damage?Again, not saying this is related or not, just trying to assess possibilities.
