Going back to the original issue of the new guide being skimpy (for lack of better word).

You might try a small patch of muffler or teflon tape cut to shape and mounted under the bolt on guide. The plastic guide will keep it in place and do most of the work, while the tape will extend the protection to where the cable leaves the shell.

A few cents and a few minutes work and you're on your way.
