Bikes: 1980s and 1990s steel: CyclePro, Nishiki, Schwinn, SR, Trek........

They should be torqued to around 30 to 40 ft-lbs; so if not corroded, 50 ft-lbs is not an unreasonable removal torque.

Please quantify: "moderate amount of force" in terms of ft-lbs (torque).
