I don't get this mentality. If you wait till it's not smooth then it may be too late to save the bearings. Same as a headset, wheelbearings, etc. At a minimum you can just pull the seals off to check if there is enough grease and if it looks OK, just put the seals back on and skip the cleaning and greasing. Simple.
