this is certainly how I look at it. Basically, with any bike bearing area, whether its a headset or a hub or bb, having enough grease in it ( I have opened up new hubs and seen that there was very little grease put in) but more importantly, having
clean grease in there keeps the bearings and contact surfaces in good shape during the life of the part.
I bring up hubs specifically because opening, cleaning out the existing grease really well and repacking with new grease, along with proper adjustments, keeps a good quality hub going for a long , long time.
Ignoring a hub for ages until it doesnt feel good turning means that the contaminated grease has caused wearing of the balls and cups and cones---I don't see any reason why these type of bb bearing systems would be any different--stuff gets in and the grease gets dirty, avoid that with preemptive regreasing and it makes sense that you have had the experience with your hollowtechs.
