You can ride the train up to Santa Barbara, and simply ride home from there. It's one of the better ways to spend a day in California IMO.

I've done the opposite many times with other BF members here, taking the inland route though Simi Valley to Camarillo, up through Ojai and up the Casitas Pass, then dropping down to the coast just south of SB. Then take Amtrak from downtown SB back to LA Union Station. The ride was about 110 mi I think...
