Well, I show up. Townhouse in one of those neo-urbanist neighborhoods. The door is open. I shout, saying my name, and I'm here. Just then I hear a loud whooshing sound like steam-powered machinery. I hear a friendly voice. He says, "Come on into the kitchen, Roll!"
So I walk in, following the sound, and I smell espresso. I round the corner, and I see the guy from the ad standing at a big, nice coffee machine like you would see in a bar in Italy, and there's a shorter, older, bald guy, who looks up and smiles in an affable way. I'm still confused. Steve is setting three cups on the table, and there's a pile of freshly baked cornetti on a platter. Steve says, "Roll, this is Tullio!" And the guy puts out his hand and says "Piacere!"
Well, what an amazing morning, let me tell you. We talked about racing, and derailleur technologies, and Vicenza, where I have visited, and just all sorts of stuff. Snapped some selfies with Steve and Tullio. About 11:30, I slipped Steve a five, and headed home. Incredible experience.
You guys would have loved it.
Was in Naples at a nasty bar near the waterfront wearing a bicycle cap. The barmaid handed me a note telling me to travel cross town to a private residence. When I arrive Ernesto & Ugo are measuring Mario C. They immediately welcome me and offer a fine red wine - to make a long story short, I get measured for a custom collaboration and a lesson in sprinting technique. Maybe I should have conjured up MarcoP but I'm not a climber. You guys would have loved it. (Well, at least I've been in Naples in a nasty bar down by the waterfront wearing a bike cap.)
