Most people don't buy phones to have phones ... they buy phones to make personal statements. Not like with bicycles, where practicality rules the day.
You are correct about phone technology is constantly improving but I've known people who destroyed their phones by mostly water, but also a lot screens, within a month of ownership! but that is an extreme, but a lot do destroy their phones in one way or another within 6 months. They can make a phone waterproof, and a screen that is tough enough without making it fugly looking. Of course they do make covers but that all just makes it bulky and ugly at the same time.
