Orange County for 46 years but did a lot of work in SD and spent a zillion weekends surfing SD beaches and riding all over. When I was into road bikes (mid 90s) we frequently did runs from Newport to the Oceanside pier and back. Going though Camp Pendleton was always "interesting." We'd also ride the rural inland portion of Carlsbad where all the farms and ranches are.
A (cat1) teammate of mine has the KOM for Montezuma - pretty impressive.
Very impressive. I used to shake my head in disbelief at those guys in the summer. I'd be sweating my butt off in full leathers and then I'd think about how FAR those dudes had to
pedal. Crazy workouts. Amazing road surface there though. Kinda freaky how pristine it is.

No skill I assure you, just dumb luck. Bent the front wheel pretty badly too.
I've had several bad downhill crashes and so I don't bomb hills the way that I used to anymore. I'll rarely exceed 40 mph on a long decent these days.
I always cringe when I watch the TDF mountain stages. An off is like jumping out of a car in your underwear. Like this year in the rain. Badasses.
