Hmm, fietsbob could be on to something. A stiff cassette freewheel mechanism would mean that the cassette is "throwing" the chain forward when you coast or pedal slower than the cassette. That now slack chain could be finding its way into the gap between the chainrings by swinging side to side at angles that it cannot take when pulled tight by the chainring. (Could it be finding its way under the pickup pins if you back pedal a little?)

This is pure first morning cup of coffee speculation.
