This is the most important point. Prevention is key. Keep your bike in good working order. Before you leave check the air in the tires, your breaking system and every spoke. Make sure you keep the chain lubed. Rehab the hubs with fresh grease every six months. (Others please add items to this list.)
I also like the idea about letting someone know of your route and when you are leaving.
