I know you are on a budget, but... ensure your bike is in good mechanical condition before you depart on "long-distance" rides.

For a properly maintained bike, there really aren't many things that can go wrong and strand a rider. Obviously, if your bike is old and in not-so-good condition, limit the distances you ride away from help. Really, punctures are the only major issue. A broken chain can be taken care of by a chainbreaker tool and a "missing link".
