Then your lesson is learned. Heck, don't but a nicer $25 pump, buy something adequate from your local big box store for $10 just to get you home. I never pretend to understand anyone's financial situation, but I can tell you that going on 75 mile rides through areas where the nearest civilization is 15 miles away with the ideals that someone will show up to fix a flat is silly. Maybe ride a bit more reasonable route if you truly can't afford it.

To be fair, 700 and 27" tubes are the same, so long as it was valved right and an appropriate width.

Nah. I've stopped to help people in the past when I could see they were in trouble. TBH, I see quite a few people standing alongside the trails with their bikes where I ride, most have absolutely nothing wrong, they are just taking a break. I'm going to ride by most without a second glance unless they are trying to get my attention.

Nothing bad about telling someone new the realities of the sport, that it is far better to be self sufficient than to hope someone else will fix things for you.
