Maybe the design is to get around patents that other shoe companies use. I agree it is complicated and also ugly with the two dangling straps.
I think it's a stupid design. There's little velcro to secure the laces, so if you have narrow feet, can you trim the laces down to make sure that enough of the velcro still engages? At least with most velcro straps you can trim the overhang and still have a decent amount of interface. How do you swap out the lace/strap if you damage the lace?
