Would it help to mention that the store was Performance Bike?
I have a hard time believing Performance Bike would search store inventory for an already built bike, have them take it apart, box it up, and send it to another store to be reassembled, instead of just shipping one out already boxed from the warehouse, unless it was some sort of limited quantity closeout.
FWIW, I've never really seen a grungy bike at the Performance locations by me. Slight wear on tires from the parking lot? Sure, but lets be realistic, five minutes into your first ride with it they will be scuffed anyhow.
