Rebuilding rear Shimano hub/wheel on Surly 1x1
Couple months ago i bought used Surly 1x1 for my kid. The original owner converted it to a fix gear with conversion kit using rotor mounts on Shimano XT hub.
A few months later I decided to check the hub internals and opened it up. One cone and one cup (on opposite sides) have classic damaged racers. I ordered new Shimano hub to replace axle but even though the external hub dimensions are identical the axle' cones/spacers are not.
I tried to put the old hub parts back 'till I think of better solution, but now wheel oscillates and makes a grinding noise every 180 degree.
So now, the only option I can think of is rebuilding the wheel with a new hub that I bought. to do it on the cheep, I can use my 16 y to do re-lace spokes and then let local REI to true the wheel.
Is it a sound plan? Am I missing something or is there a easy/inexpensive way to restore his bike?
Thanks
