To do that in comfort and no pain, is just a huge plus. That is why I love hybrids. Especially the comfortable ones like the Verve, Roll, and CrossRoads. The bikes really cater to people who have ailments like myself (lower back issues). When I had my road bike for about 3 weeks, I just fell in love with how fast, light, and how easy it was to do hills. The pain was just to much for me however.

I am looking forward to getting the CrossRoads. I plan on picking one up in the dead of winter, say around February. Hopefully I will get some kind of deal for it from my LBS.
The deals are right now if you can find a leftover '16 - the '17's are already coming out. I got $100 off list.
And $50 off the Roll. High-volume dealer, so they discount them and blow them out. Pretty high-rent district too. Very nice people - stocking Giant, Specialized, and Electra.

The nicest store out of all the brands were the Trek dealers. The worst were the Performance Bicycles shops - the chain stores, although they had some of the cheapest prices. I almost bought a Fuji Absolute 1 - flatbar roadbike from them - steal deal.

And then there was another nice independent dealer, had the Giant FastRoad SLR - at $1100 otd. It was a bit over budget - super nice bike though. And Giant Escape with carbon and discs.

But like you I have multiple back injuries and a torn rotator - I can't even lift a bike off a rack right now. So those fast roadbikes just don't work for me.
