I haven't been active in this scene for a while, but I'm asking for my sister's friend. She wants to know if it's cheaper to buy a fixie and then convert it with a derailleur and gears. I'm not 100%, but I think one of Surly's Karate Monkey and Cross Check's perks are that its dropouts can be used for either setup. I told her it might not be possible with just any frame and she'd be better off buying a geared bike from bikesdirect. Am I wrong?
