I usually do that when I get a creaky bottom bracket. Pull it out, clean it, light grease on sealed bearing outer surfaces, cup threads, spindle taper, and inside edge of the crank (for the bolt washer). That usually cures it. This usualy happens after riding in the rain once or twice. Typical cleaning and maintenance item.
