On my straight-bar commuter bike, I have an incredibell mounted on the right where I can ding it with my index finger with my hand on the grip. I mostly brake with my left (front) anyway and it leaves my right thumb free to downshift at the same time. Part of my commute is on a MUP, so it gets some use regularly.
