A reminder before this goes too far astray. OP specifically asked about mfgs instructions and provided those of Phil Wood. If Shimano cranks come with a dab of grease, it's safe to say Shimano prefers a greased interface. Most of us who worked on bikes in the square taper days have an opinion, but like the OP, I think it would be interesting to know what the mfgs recommend. Anyone have NIB square tapers? Any instructions in the box or grease on the cranks? What about bottom brackets? Any new ones with grease on the spindle?
